Pub walk: The Anchor, Barcombe

Everyone loves a pub. Most people love a walk. Put the two together, add in the river Ouse and you have a lovely day out.

A well-known (but not too well-known) walk is to park in Barcombe, head along the river to the pub, then head back along the disused railway line. It’s all flat, only 2 ½ miles long (30-45 mins each way) and a lovely way to spend a day, whatever the weather.

Halfway along, you’ll reach the the Anchor Inn. The food is great (the Anchor burger went down well with my family, as did the ploughman’s), and that atmosphere is gentle and restful. In warmer times, the garden is a lovely spot to enjoy the sunshine, and you can even hire a canoe.

A bit further along the river, I remember a few years ago there being a fantastic swing on a branch over the river. My son and his friend spent a very happy afternoon there, but then again it was August and hot!

But whatever the weather, this is a lovely walk, and a great pub. Enjoy…
